Bert, Paul

Bert, Paul
(1833-1886)
   physiologist, political figure
Born in Auxerre, Paul Bert was a student of claude Bernard and did his initial research on grafts and transplants, the physiology of respiration, the variations in functionary atmospheric pressure, and anesthetics. In 1878, he did the first comprehensive studies of the health effects of altered air pressure and composition, published under the title La Pression barometrique. Then leaving science for politics, he served as minister of public instruction in the gambetta cabinet (1881-82) and contributed to reforms in education, in particular, the adoption of free schooling and obligatory primary instruction. In 1886, he was named governor-general of Annam and Tonkin in Indochina. Bert was elected to the Academy of Sciences in 1882.
